Uno Fitness Workout for Kids * Little Miss…

Here’s another idea for making fitness fun for kids.  It shouldn’t seem like a punishment or something they absolutely dread, but just part of life, like brushing your teeth or putting on your shoes.  Something you just do because it helps to keep you healthy and strong.  This activity switches things up a bit by using Uno Cards to help determine the activity and how many reps that will be done.  You could also do this with a regular deck of cards and instead of colors use the card symbol to determine the activity.

Don’t forget to check out the benefits of fitness for kids!

Purpose of Activity:

To increase cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength.

Materials Needed:

– Deck of “UNO” cards -Colored signs (1 of each color in UNO deck) -Paper card with an exercise listed;   ex: red=push ups, yellow=mountain climbers; blue=wide sumo squats, green=side jumps (or lateral jumps) or you can create your own exercises for each color.

wild card draw pile with cards with activities listed on them

Description of Idea

Each child is dealt or draws a UNO card. They are to perform an activity by the following criteria:

  • Skip Card — skip one lap around the yard or down the street and back
  • Reverse Card — jog/walk 1 lap around the yard or around the street or neighborhood
  • Draw 2 Card — draw 2 cards from regular UNO cards deck and perform the activity which corresponds to the card color using the number of repetitions indicated by the number on the card
  • Wild Draw 4 Card — draw 4 cards from the UNO deck and do all 4 activities
  • Wild Card – Pick a color and do the activity for 10 repetitions
  • Number Cards — the child does the number of repetitions indicated by the corresponding to the color. Example: A child draws a card that is 5 red. Go to the red sign with the exercise listed and do 5 push-ups or whatever that sign has listed.

After completing an activity the student puts the card back in the completed pile and the student is dealt another card. Continue this for a set amount of time or each child has completed a certain number of cards.

Here is an updated version of the activity that allows you to do this at home.

Variations:

Other types of activities could be included such as jumping rope,  bench steps, or frog leaps to get away from traditional exercises.

Try the activity as a group challenge. Can your group do X amount of the activity in a given amount of time? How many cards were you able to complete?

Acorn Craft for Fall- Pinterest Nailed it or Failed it? * Little Miss…

Pinterest nailed it or failed it? …. There are a ton, literally a ton of acorns around our house, and the kids have started gathering them and throwing them (awesome, right?!).  I decided that Pinterest must have something we could do with these acorns that would make use of the excess that we have, plus keep us busy one afternoon.

I found various different painted and glitter acorn options that were pretty and cool.

https://www.homestoriesatoz.com/fall-2/how-to-paint-acorns.html https://craftsbyamanda.com/bright-painted-acorns/

Painting Acorns for Fall Craft Project

Super cute, right?!  Plus it doesn’t look that difficult to do.  After all, it’s an acorn craft.  Ha! The joke was on me.  It started out with my husband suggested that since we had so many acorns we should put them on a cookie sheet covered with foil and roll them in the paint.  The colors winded up being less distinctive (obviously) but the kids were all on board with splattering paint on the pan and rolling acorns around.

There were also some attempts at finger painting the acorns, and let’s just say there were some very messy hands and paint that winded up on the white door.  It was fun though, so I can’t say I actually regret it.

We used a painting dropcloth over the table to protect it and so it wasn’t a big deal for any paint to get on that while we did the craft.

For the acorn “hats” we put them on some foil and used spray glue to spray them before sprinkling glitter all over them.  Yes, it was as messy and sticky as it sounds, but again, ultimately it was fun to do.

Waiting for the acorns to dry… which takes a surprisingly (or not) long amount of time when there is globs of paint on the acorns.

We decided to add some glitter to some of the acorns as well while they were still a little wet.

Pinterest Nailed it or Failed it

Our Finished acorns went into a couple mason jars for decoration.  No, they don’t look like the pretty acorns in the Pinterest pictures but they were fun to do and we spent some time laughing and joking as we did them so I would say it was worth it

Deciding What to Click and Share Online

Deciding What To Click and Share

Covid-19 has taken the internet to new levels.  Yes, I guess it was possible.  We’ve seen those cellphone video moments of people screaming over mask, coughing on others, throwing mask off displays- you know the ones.  I won’t even touch the various political post.  You may feel appalled or outraged seeing this content. The knee jerk reaction for many is to click and leave a comment or share.   The thing is, should that be our reaction?  Should we continue to spread it?

There’s a great article by Andrew Macdonald that discusses how we should handle what we see online. Conspiracy Theories, Engaging Online and Wisdom: The Intersection of the Three and How to Respond Biblically.

Being A Solution Instead of Just Talking About The Problem

Mental health is something we’ve long neglected and this situation that we’re currently in isn’t helping that at all.   No, these actions are not excused because of that however it does help explain why it may happen.  Instead of reacting to the outburst maybe we should step back and think about the root issue.  The fact that this person may have more going on than what we can see.  As Christians, maybe we don’t share the content, but we stop what we’re doing, and we pray.  We pray for God, who is the only one who fully sees the situation, to guide us for how we should proceed and what we can do to help.   We pray for him to hold them close and give them peace.   The other side of this is that the constant negativity and ‘fake news’ starts to chip away at our own self and is only giving us negativity.   Remember the old theory of ‘garbage in, garbage out’?  It applies to the situation as well.  Sometimes you just have to step back and turn it off.

The fear that the Covid-19 virus has brought on is very real, and everyone handles it differently. The fact that we were quarantined and that for a month or more in some places there were “stay at home” orders has taken a toll on everyone.  We won’t soon forget the toilet paper shortage fears anytime soon.   Yes, I’m sure some people were mean beforehand but regardless the current conditions don’t help.  Instead of spreading fear and hate, it’s time to come together and pray.  It’s time to come together and find creative ways to serve our community.   Maybe that’s an encouraging note, maybe it’s a smile as you walk down the street.   Maybe that’s not discussing politics and conspiracy theories, but instead breaking bread and inspiring others based on how you live your life.

 STRIVE TO INSPIRE

Let your life inspire people to find out how you have joy in the midst of despair.  I’m not saying ignore things or that you won’t wonder sometimes if things will be ok. We don’t know what the future holds, but we know who holds it.  Choosing to trust isn’t the easiest thing to do.  For most of us, it’s not the natural reaction thing to do either.  It takes practice and a conscious decision to do.   The human connection between us all is very real.   Six degrees of separation is more of a legit theory than we want to admit sometimes.

The current environment feels more like every man for himself rather than a sense of community.  Since March, we’ve been thrown into what sort of feels like some sort of alternate reality horror flick.  It’s time that we realize that we’re all intertwined and what we do affects more than just us.

That retail worker that just asked you to put on a mask?  Her mom may be a heart surgeon that saves your aunt’s life.  That janitor that you stuck your nose up at?   He’s the one that is sanitizing your child’s school to help make sure that everything possible is being done to prevent a Covid-19 outbreak.   No job is too big or too small.  Without all of us working together things suffer.  One person can’t do it all, but individually we can all play small parts that makeup something great.

I’m not insinuating that it’s easy and that it won’t feel like a complete waste of time to choose kindness when it feels like it isn’t making a difference, but I’m just saying; sometimes results from our seeds aren’t immediately seen.  This is where faith comes in.  Faith that the seeds will grow and create change.   So before you click and share that content, stop and think about what you’re re-generating.  Is it hope?  Is it helpful?  Is it just bad that you are giving value to by sharing?

Choose kindness.  Choose love.

Fall Decorating

It’s fun to decorate for the season, especially this time of year because many times you have more guests around than usual (while 2020 may look a little different as far as the guests, the decorating will still make you smile.). The thing is, I don’t want to spend a ton of money to put up decorations, I mean let’s face it, there’s already a lot of spending going on at the end of the year.  No need to worry though- I’ve found some great options on  Fall decorating on a budget!

Looking for some summer activities that you can plan during all this uncertainty?  Here’s a list of things that are guaranteed to bring a smile and fun memories during your summer!

    • Movie Night – Outside! Love these ideas from Red Triclycle on hosting an outdoor movie night.  Buzzfeed has some great indoor movie ideas as well!
    • Go for a hike/ ride bikes through a trail – So much scenery to take in and talk about what you see as you walk or ride a bike
    • Water Gun Fights: These are great for the Summer because it’s a fun way to cool yourselves down on a hot Summer day!
  • Go on a Scavenger hunt: These are good in order to occupy a certain amount of time with kids! It helps them learn competition if you grant the winner a prize in the end!
  • Make S’mores: Who doesn’t love s’mores and they are very delicious at the end of a long day roasting them over the fire as a family!  Our favorite smores are made using McVities Digestive Cookies (sounds odd, I know but trust me.  If you’ve ever gotten a s’more pie from Blaze Pizza you will understand), marshmallow, and chocolate.  It’s perfection.
  • Go on a picnic: Picnics are a great way to spend time together as a family! They are fun and you let the kids help to prepare all the food for it!
  • Make Ice Cream: Ice Cream is a great treat for a hot day but instead of just going to get ice cream, you can look up a simple recipe online and make it yourselves!
  • Go fishing: You may have to help them out a bit, but when they catch their very own fish they are always so surprised and love it!
  • Have a Tea Party: This is fun! Whether you get real tea or not they like to have fun with having a little party! Dress it up, stick out your pinky and enjoy!
  • Play I Spy: This is a great way to work on their searching skills!
  • Go to the Beach: Make sure you take plenty of sunscreen…and things for playing in the sand.
  • Draw with Sidewalk Chalk: The possibilities are endless with sidewalk chalk! You can use your creative skills on sidewalks and your driveway!

Virtual school can feel taxing when you can’t leave home.  The backyard does offer some relief but knowing that you aren’t supposed to go anywhere can often make you feel like you really just want to go… anywhere!!  I was trying to find something new to do when I remembered that I bought a book of science experiments for kids at Christmas because they love science.    There’s an experiment in it that asks- Can water and candy make art?  It looked easy enough so I decided to try it out. This is a great way to get rid of some Easter candy but not completely waste it!

Candy Science Experiments

First up was Skittles.  This is what they used in their example in the book as well.

From the book Awesome Science Experiments for Kids The experiment in the book

First, we got a white plate.  Next, I got hot water (which I handled instead of the kids).   The kids put the candy on the plate arranging them as they chose. Then, I poured the hot water on the plate with enough to cover the bottom of the candy.

We first tried the skittles, which looked a lot like the image in the book.  The kids noted that the candy shell melted off the one side.   Almost instantly you could see the colors coming through and becoming more vibrant. They said the Skittle was sweet even with the bottom part of the shell melted off.

Since that was fun, we decided to see what other kinds of candy we could use to do this with as well.  Next up, was NERDS.

NERDS Candy Science Experiment

We followed the same steps with the NERDS.  The colors ran out and were bright.  The colors mixing did come out to a very green/brown color with all the different NERD colors.  One was shaped as an exploding volcano which turned out really cool.   The kids decided to taste a couple of the nerds afterward and said that because the outside had come off they were tangier than normal.

Jelly Beans  Candy Science Experiment

Next up, Jelly Beans!

Initially one started off as a smiley but it changed after my daughter thought about it and didn’t think there would be enough colors to mix together.    The jelly beans turned out ok, the colors were lighter than the other two experiments.   The kids tasted a jelly bean and determined they were still just as sweet.

M&M’s Science Experiment

While it’s true M&M’s melt in your mouth and not in your hand, there’s an exception when you add hot water to a plate for a candy science experiment!

Because they were having so much fun doing the science experiments, the kids asked if we could do one more.   I remembered that we had some M&M’s in the cabinet and took them down. We had some plain ones as well as some hazelnut (hence the different sizes).  These were my favorite.  The colors were so pretty!  This one was their favorite too.

This was a super easy activity, helped us get rid of some candy without just throwing it in the garbage,  and there was some learning involved.  The kids wrote down their hypotheses and observations of what happened each time.  We talked about the scientific method and steps in it (since my 3rd grader is currently covering it in school).  They had a sense of pride and accomplishment with their research which was fun to see.  They also learned that saw that science is an adventure.  Plus, clean up was super easy!

It was a nice break in our day and takes some of the stress out of virtual school, working from home, and feeling like you are stuck.

There are a lot of cute, easy experiments in the book and it’s totally worth the price (currently $8.99 on Amazon).

St. Patrick’s Day is literally right around the corner.  I’ve compiled some fun facts, crafts, activities, and snacks that can be done to help in celebrating!   This post is packed with some fun information so let’s jump in!St Patrick’s Day Crafts

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of St. Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland.  He was actually born in Britan but kidnapped and taken to Ireland.  The holiday has also become a celebration of all things Irish.  Cities such as New York City who has a high Irish population has had a St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1762. The first St. Patricks’s Day celebration was in Boston in 1737.

About St. Patrick’s Day

The Color Green and St. Patrick’s Day

Blue was traditionally the color associated with St. Patrick, but somewhere along the way, green became the commonly connected color.  The shamrock, which is the Irish national plant is also a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day. The Chicago River is dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day and other landmarks often get into the spirit as well.  The Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House light up green.

More St. Patricks Day Fun!

Valentines Day is a great day just to remind those close to you that you are thinking about them.   I’ve compiled a list of Valentines Day gift ideas for the kids, friends, and teachers in your life.  Plus, there’s only one selection that is candy so if you’re trying to avoid sweets for someone there are some good options here for you to check out!

Top 10 Gift for Valentines Day

  1. Decorate Your Own Wooden Heart Kit

Chocolate always winds up getting thrown away at our house it seems.  This mostly happens because the kids just forget about it.  That’s why I like this gift idea so much.  It’s an activity they can do and then use later as well.

This adorable chest gives the gift of DIY and a heart-shaped chest.  Kids can make it their own and then use it for their treasure!

2. Piggy Paint

Piggy Paint is a non-toxic “natural as mud” polish for kids.  I love it and use it for my daughter.  Kids tend to put their fingers in their mouth and this is a nice balance of still getting to paint their nails without having to worry about chemicals in the paint.  It comes in a variety of different colors and can also be found in Target!

3. LEGO BrickHeadz Valentine’s Bee

Legos are definitely a favorite thing to do at our house currently.  This LEGO BrickHeadz Valentine Bee is cute and will satisfy the LEGO lover in your house.  LEGOS are a great STEM toy and have been shown to help boost children’s STEM skills.

Speaking of LEGO, have you seen my post on the Legoland Florida Resort?

4. Don’t Laugh Valentines Challange

Getting kids to read is important, which is why I love this next idea.   “The Don’t Laugh Challange Joke Book” Valentines Day edition is a great way to do that without it seeming like work or something that isn’t fun.  This book one up’s that by making it a challenge, where you sit at eye level in front of your opponent and take turns reading the jokes to see who laughs first.  On Amazon’s site, you can get a ‘sneak peek’ inside the book where you can check out some of the jokes inside.

5. Emoji Heart Bracelet

This emoji heart bracelet is only $9.99 at Amazon.  It’s cute and sure to make the emoji lover in your life smile and think of you when they look at it.

6. Tacos are my Valentine T-Shirt

For the one in your life that loves tacos and funny t-shirts, this is for them!

7. Ferrero Rocher

If you want to give chocolate, it’s important to give good chocolate and these you can never go wrong with. Whether this gift is for a teacher, friend, or child (one that’s big enough to eat nuts of course) this is a yummy option!

8. One Smart Cookie

I love this gift idea, and it’s a cute gift to give a teacher as well.   Have a Cricut?  You could easily make this with some iron-on vinyl, a spatula and a pack of cookie mix.   Not feeling crafty or don’t have the time?  Check out this One Smart Cookie gift on Etsy!

9. Coffee Warmer

This is another cute option for a teacher or friend.   The best part is, this warmer can be used for tea, cocoa, or even soup!  Yes, soup! How brilliant is that??

10. Valentines Pillow

Who couldn’t use a pillow?  This one is adorable with a bicycle and hearts.  Amazon has a few different options but this was one of my favorites.  You could even pair it with some chocolates or a book.

It Started With Bold Week

In the business of life, we sometimes forget that we are a part of our overall community. It’s easy to do when you are already being pulled in so many different directions. This past year, we started attending a new church and during a week in August they have something called “Bold Week.”  It’s a week where several of the local churches in the community get together and go into the 6 local schools in that part of the city and they help teachers get things together- they clean, they paint, whatever is needed- they do it.  They feed teachers and administration and help them prepare for students and get the school year off on the right foot. The goal of Bold Week is to show the community that the local church as a whole- not one denomination or another- is coming together to serve the community.   They invest into the community by serving schools which in turn serves students, which can get their school year started off on a positive step.  It can change the direction of a child’s life. It never occurred to me that the schools might need help getting all of this together or that there may be ways that I could help serve the local school to make a positive impact.  I know the statement sounds sort of dumb- but the fact is life gets crazy and we overlook the simple things.

A Vinyl Idea

You’ve probably seen on Facebook, Pinterest, or even the internet in general school bathrooms where positive sayings and affirmations are being applied to stall doors with either paint or vinyl.  It brightens up the school bathrooms and also is there to encourage students. I came across a post about it and thought it was brilliant.  I debated on asking my child’s school about doing it there but I wasn’t even sure if they had stalls there (or if they were individual bathrooms).  This school is not in the same community where we attend church and wasn’t one of the six that were being served at.

Self Confidence is something that I still struggle with but I sucked it up and emailed the school to ask if they’d be open to having it done.   To my shocking surprise withing thirty minutes of me emailing the principal emails me back and said: “We were actually supposed to have someone do this but they had to cancel at the last minute.”  I let her know I’d be more than happy to do it for them and we scheduled a meeting.

Come to find out, there were 25 bathroom stalls, then shared individual bathrooms for Kindergarten and First Grade at the school.  A piece of me wondered what I was getting into but, then I thought- I’m up for the challenge!

Quotes, Cutting and Weeding Lots Of Vinyl

Over the next few weeks, I went through lots of quotes and affirmations to find the ones I felt would work best.  Making sure that the fonts could be read by younger kids so that it wasn’t just “pretty” and served a purpose.  I don’t know exactly how many hours went into it, but it was a lot.  Luckily,  I found a lot of really great quotes at lovesvg.com.  I created some, which took a while and then others I was able to edit png images through Cricut Design Studio.
If you don’t have a Cricut but are a crafty person- these things are amazing!  The older ones you were much more limited because you had to use cartridges but for the new ones the possibilities are endless!
You want to use permanent vinyl which can be found at Cricut.com or also at 651vinyl.com.

A Few Vinyl Quotes/Affirmations That Were Cut

See the Hidden Mickey? 😉

My daughter helped with the weeding process on some of the quotes.  At first, I didn’t tell her what we were doing it for but then I wanted her to know that we were doing it as a way of investing in the school. I want her to know she should take pride in her school and that we see it as an important thing.   There are many different ways to convey this to your child, this was at the moment, the way we were able to convey it to ours.

Installing Vinyl On Bathroom Stalls

This Batman one was my favorite in the sense of the quote meaning.  I have a picture of BatKid in our walk-in closet as a reminder to myself that what I Do defines me.

above: the picture that inspires me daily

A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength but by the strength of his heart.

My husband and another fantastic mom helped in installing the vinyl.  It took a few hours but we all agree it was well worth it.  I hope that it inspires a child.  Maybe if their day is a little rough it can make them smile.  Maybe it will serve as a reminder to them.  It may be later down the road when they look back and remember it being there that they see someone hoped to brighten their day. We can’t fix everything, and we don’t have time to.  But it’s important to stop and realize that we can still do something, no matter how small.

Teaching Kindness In An Entitled World * Little Miss…

We live in an entitled society.  I’m not sure at what point it started but there are times when it feels like it’s taking over. People are either entitled to something or pointing fingers at why they haven’t accomplished a goal because it can’t be their fault after all.  I know it’s always happened and will always be around but to sit back and let it go on feels wrong.  It scares me, as a mom that my kids could fall into this way of thinking.  Here’s the absolute truth about it all- Nobody owes you anything. Be grateful for the good things that come along. Be kind to people, even when you don’t think they deserve it.   It’s tough sometimes, I know, but that doesn’t make it any less true..be kind

Teaching Graciousness

Graciousness doesn’t always come naturally.  There are times when you have to step back and pause a moment before you respond so that you can see the situation in a different light.

I try (not always successfully) to pass this along to my kids.  They are 5 and 3 so it’s not always the easiest thing to convey.  I recently had to explain that we don’t buy a toy every time we are in Target.  Let’s just say, it wasn’t the prettiest of situations at first…did I mention we go to Target a lot?    It’s a struggle as any parent knows.

The Doll Kind

This past Christmas I came across a new doll from a company called The DOLL KIND.   You choose a doll, it comes with tokens on one said it says “Pay It Forward” on the other it says “This is a token is a sign of (love, kindness, ect). The idea is, that your child shares these tokens with others.  Their website has a great graphic on suggestions to do so-

AND…for each doll you buy one is donated to a less fortunate child.  The donation sites include orphanages, hospitals, shelters and more throughout both the United States and other parts of the world.

I love this doll because it promotes kindness and thinking of others.  It promotes taking the time out to ‘pay it forward’ and put a smile on someone’s face. My daughter loves to share these with people and a lot of times she tries to do it anonymously (which she came up with on her own).  My son, who is 3 doesn’t quite get the whole concept but he’s learning it which fills my hear with joy.

We have Masha (The Grace Doll) and Jack (The Hope Doll).  I love that not only are they adorable, but they teach a lesson as well.  Not to mention that you get one, you give one.  Teaching kindness and being mindful of it as well as graciousness takes time and even as adults we have to be reminded of it.  This is a great way to open up that conversation with your child and use it as a reminder as well.

garmin vivofit jr 2

It’s important to encourage kids with physical activity without making it seem like a chore or punishment.  As parents, we want them to associate fitness with something positive, not negative. When we get up and move it is not only good for our body but our minds as well.   It’s also good to teach kids to be mindful of what they are doing and how their time is spent.  The Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 is a fun fitness tracker that provides a way to introduce kids to exercise and help them establish healthy habits.

What is Garmin Vivofit Jr. 2?

The band is a fitness tracker geared specifically towards kids.  They have fun bands that include favorite franchises such as Star Wars, Avengers, Disney Princesses, and more. The main purpose of the tracker is very similar to what adults use them for- it allows for steps to be counted, daily goals to be set and it can monitor sleep as well.  To up the ante on fun, Garmin has created a Vivofit jr. App which has fun games that kids earn moves on based on their activity.

Kids are able to set up competitions with themselves or with others to see who can get the most steps in a certain timeframe. This could be anywhere from a toe to toe challenge for two minutes, to a week-long competition.

The bands are waterproof and come with a 1+ year battery (which is replaceable) so there’s no need to worry about charging.

Another cool aspect of the bands is that timers and chores can be set within the app.  When the chore is completed then they can earn coins that accumulate until a reward is reached. You can set reminders which will show on their band, for example, if they should start homework at 3:30, the watch will display an alert at that time.

Why is Physical Activity Important?

It’s been proven that regular physical activity can help kids improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease (CDC).

The Vivofit Jr. 2 Band is a great way to make kids aware of how much activity they are getting and allows them to challenge themselves to real goals.  It’s a great tool to encourage physical activity and make them aware of how much they are getting in a fun way.

Verdict on Vivotfit Jr 2 Band Review

The kids love their Vivofit Jr. 2 Band and that they earn moves on the app when the meet their 60-minute activity goal.  For my nine-year-old, it also helps when she wants to sit in front of the tv and don’t realize how long she’s been doing it until I ask what her activity for the day so looks like.  It also makes for less arguing that “I haven’t been sitting here all day” which is a bonus.

My six-year-old loves his band as well and enjoys the challenges.  He also likes having the ability to set timers whether it’s for a challenge or to see how long it takes him to take a bath.

I want fitness to be a part of what they do not some dreaded forced activity.  The Vivofit Jr. 2 Band helps accomplish that.  Since using the bands, there is a definite increase in awareness of activity and fun in making sure that they meet challenges and goals.  Yes, there are definitely still lazy days but there is also excitement when they meet two activity rings or have a large number of steps giving them a sense of accomplishment which is a lot of fun to see.

The bands themselves are very durable and we haven’t had any issues with the graphics on them or the band coming off.  As mentioned earlier they are waterproof so the kids can wear them in the tub or pool with no worries of damage.   I’ve found that these have been a really fun way to remind the kids to be active without being pushy or feeling forced.

I hope you found this Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 review helpful!

Where to Find

You can find the Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 Bands at retailers such as Target and Walmart as well as on Amazon.  You can also find bands only on Amazon so that you can swap them out with new bands.

Bands ONLY

Have you tried the Vivofit Jr 2?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Beauty Products Worth Buying

It can be frustrating and hard to find beauty products that work. It is helpful when you can find a person who has actually used the product and can give an opinion on it. As a mom, I tend to pick and choose when I spend on myself carefully so it’s also important to me that I don’t just buy stuff.   That is why I decide to share some of my absolute favorite products.  This isn’t a sponsored post, however, for convenience, there are some links (including a couple affiliate ones) in case you are interested in them, but they are products that I tend to always have on hand and have even used as gifts. These are my must have beauty products worth buying.

6 Must-Have Beauty Products

Heir Atelier Lip Primer

If you hate wearing lipstick because of the way it feels dry on your lips this product solves that!  As you can see by the mini lipstick from Bobbi Brown I previously didn’t wear a whole lot of lipstick… that one came in a sample.   It works great under lipstick or even alone to be completely honest.   Heir Atelier Lip Primer helps to moisturize your lips and leave them feeling silky smooth.

Best Primer- Heir Atelier Face Primer

It is all about the base!   I was in Sephora one time and overheard trainee ask an associate “what is a good kind of make-up for me to buy and wear?”  The associate replied, “Honestly, it doesn’t matter which kind you buy, it’s all about the skin you are putting the makeup on and a using a high quality primer.”   This primer gives your skin a smooth feel and makes sure your makeup goes on nice and evenly.  The Heir Atelier Face Primer is one of the only primers I have used where I have noticed a difference on how my makeup looks with it vs without it.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation

Do you have an issue with makeup rubbing off on your shirt? If you have never had it happen to you count yourself lucky!  I have bought high-end makeup and still had a problem with this until I tried Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation.    There is no rub off or transfer that happens…which is a big deal when you’ve had to deal with makeup stains on white shirts.   It has a medium coverage (so you don’t look like you have a mask on).  It does feel thick but on your skin, it does not feel cakey or weighed down.

Younique Moodstruck 4D Mascara

This mascara will make your eyelashes pop!  I have a friend who sells Younique makeup (check her out on Facebook- Younique by Charity) which is why I tried it to begin with.  Well, that and I’m always on the lookout for good mascara.   This one is as close to it looks like I bought false lashes as I’ve ever come across.   It’s definitely worth a try and as a bonus you’ll be happy to know that Younique supports fighting sexual abuse through their Younique Foundation and Defend Innocence.

Kendra Blow Dry Spray

This stuff is a lifesaver for those of us with thick hair.   If there is one hair product that I would say is a MUST have, it’s this one.  It cut my blow dry time in half and it doesn’t take as much effort to get it all dry using the Kendra Blow Dry Spray.  It is light and smells so good! I’ve used this for a couple years now and was introduced to it by my hair dresser.   She was amazed at the amount of time it saved to dry my hair as well.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Brazilian Dry Oil

Acai Brazilian Dry Oil is another product that is fantastic for women with thick hair. It helps to smooth hair and make it feel soft and touchable. My hair is naturally curly and course so just a pump to a pump ½ works great without making my hair look oily.  For those with not so thick hair it could feel too heavy or if too much is used, make it feel oily.  It’s one of those products where a little goes a long way for sure.  A friend of mine who has much thinner hair than mine had purchased it but felt it left her hair feeling heavy which is how I got my first bottle of the dry oil.

Kopari Coconut Body Milk Lotion

This Coconut Lotion is like magic to dry skin.  I follow The Chic Mamas on Instagram and she talks a lot about skin care.  She has three young kids so I figured who better to ask about  my son’s super dry skin?  It was so bad he was scratching and leaving marks on his back so I asked her if there was something she’d recommend for really dry skin and she mentioned Kopari Coconut Body Milk.    I bought some and within days I could see a big difference.  My skin gets dry in the winter especially, causing my legs to itch and this lotion takes care of that.  It has a light scent and isn’t greasy.  My husband was working with some concrete so his hands were very dry and he used some of this and was amazed at how much it helped.  He swears by it.  He has tried using Aquaphor to help the dryness and it took a few days to help whereas with this there was a difference almost immediately.  Which says a lot because we are big fans of Aquaphor too.

Have you tried any of these? Let me know your thoughts or favorite products!

how do I cook with my kids

There are so many benefits to cooking with kids in the kitchen. It’s quality time that can be spent together but also teaches them many critical life skills during the process as well. Getting started can be a bit of a struggle sometimes. Knowing what is appropriate based on their age, finding a healthy recipe to cook with them, or figuring out ways to involve kids in the kitchen can get tricky (and let’s face it kind of intimidating) when you actually get into it.

Resources To Help You Start Cooking With Kids

I recently found some great resources to help answer all of these questions!  These provide some answers and ideas bringing kids in the kitchen to not only learn but help you out.

Fit Mama Real Food
This site has a page dedicated specifically to cooking with kids and she has some super helpful resources on the topic!

Heather offers some great tips and advice. She’s a mom of four so you know life has to be hectic and she can understand the challenges that come up with bringing kids into the kitchen to help.

Food Network Recipes with Kids

Another great resource is Food Network, with their Cooking with Kids section which offers recipes to make with kids, as well as ideas on kitchen task and easy baking projects.

Cooking Task Kids Can Help With at Every Age

Kids Health from Nemours

Nemours is a trusted health resource and offers some advice on Cooking with Kids as well. Here are some of their suggestions:

Create opportunities for cooking with your kids when you aren’t short on time. If someone is hangry, it’s probably not a good time to try it.

Prep work- Depending on your child/s age it can be easier if you do some prep work that could be pre-measuring for little ones, or pre-cutting things.

Most things work better when you set up the expectations upfront and this is no exception. Explain the boundaries and rules of the kitchen. If there’s a task an adult must complete let them know upfront.

Keep it simple at first and let them complete a task that is small and easy to do with minimal assistance. This allows kids to build their skills slowly and the more you do it the more challenging the task can become.

Kids don’t have the longest of attention spans sometimes so it’s good to keep this in mind. For younger kids, it’s a good idea to give them a little bit of a break understanding they may not be ready to follow through from start to finish.

Don’t forget to provide encouragement and affirm their accomplishments.  Be as specific/descriptive as possible with how they are doing a good job. For example, instead of just “great job!” you could say, “you did a great job mixing all the ingredients together and making sure they are all combined!” If something goes wrong, remind them it happens to everyone, and as long as they learn from it.

Kitchen Tools For Kids

Here are some tools from Amazon that are helpful and kid-friendly!

There are so many memories and lessons that are learned in the kitchen that kids will hold on to for years to come. It can be overwhelming and frustrating at times, so remember when those moments come, it’s not just you. There will be really fun and good moments too. The good moments will do your heart better than you can imagine!

Kids * Page 2 of 7 * Little Miss…

Learning how to take turns might seem like a minor part of a childhood development that comes naturally over time. In reality, it’s actually a complex skill that doesn’t come easy for a lot of children.

Turn-taking involves not only the ability to wait but always an awareness of when one person’s turn ends and another’s begins. This is compounded by the subtle social cues and rules of communication that takes place when people talk or share toys, or participate in the classroom.

Turn-taking is a fundamental part of how we communicate and socially interact. When children struggle, it can often take many forms. Some children interrupt people when they’re speaking or find it difficult to actively listen. Others don’t understand the rhythm of communication. Children who struggle with turn-taking in social situations often have trouble in school or building friendships with their peers.

So why do some children have trouble?

One of the most common reasons is speech and language delays. This happens when a child doesn’t develop their speech and language skills at the expected rate for their age. These developmental problems are quite common and affect about 10% of all children.

Fortunately, there are many strategies parents can do with their child at home to improve their speech and language abilities, encourage turn-taking, and promote conversational exchanges. I’ve outlined a few tips and best practices below:

  • Play Games: Many of the most popular games you may have at home can help your child naturally learn turn-taking. Think Go-fish, Candyland, and Uno. You put a card down, roll the dice, move a piece on the board – and then it’s your child’s turn. For younger children who aren’t ready for board games just yet, insert turn taking into everyday play activities. I put a block on the tower, then you, then me, then you. Blowing bubbles is another crowd-pleaser.
  • Promote Sharing: It’s not uncommon for kids to have a tough time sharing. However, as a parent, it’s important not to give in and let your kiddo run the show. That’s not how things work on the playground, at school, or when we engage in conversation. Make sure to insist that you always have a turn. Use helpful language and hand gestures: “First my turn, then your turn.” Practice makes perfect, so try to be consistent on a day-to-day basis.
  • Be Responsive: Children communicate in a variety of ways, from babbling or crying as infants, pulling your shirt or using gestures as toddlers, to using words when they’re older. However, they express their needs, being responsive can promote their understanding about the value of communicating. Knowing someone will be responsive when they signal for attention helps them navigate the world around them.
  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: Asking questions that prompt one-word answers, such as “yes or no” questions, limits the responses your child will have. You want to help them with their conversational skills, and this doesn’t happen when children repeat words they already know. Instead, try asking questions that start with “how” or why.” This will help your child learn to express their thoughts and feelings using different words and language.
  • Use a Timer: Playground arguments between children can be commonplace if they’re struggling to take turns. Using a timer is an easy way to ensure everyone gets the same amount of time to play with a toy, or go down the slide, or partake in an activity. It helps reinforce the value and importance of sharing.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Try not to raise your voice or accuse your child when they fail to take turns. Similarly, if your child refuses to give up a toy, don’t yank it from their hands (this can discourage generosity by making children even more protective). Instead, praise and celebrate them when they demonstrate positive behavior. “You’re doing a great job waiting patiently – good work!”
  • Calmly Handle Undesirable Behavior: If your child becomes upset or disruptive, remove them from the activity and give them an opportunity to calm down. Speak slowly and use clear language when describing why they had to be removed from the previous setting, and use it as an opportunity for a learning experience.
  • Seek Professional Help: As mentioned above, speech and language delays are a common reason many children struggle to take turns. If you are concerned about your child’s development, it’s important to seek help from a speech-language pathologist (SLP). They are the most qualified professional to help evaluate, diagnose, and treat speech and language delays, as well as other communication disorders.

What’s your favorite thing to cook in the kitchen with your children?

Summer is so much fun, but it can also be stressful too.  As a kid growing up we didn’t do a lot of vacations, and summer break didn’t equate to going on a trip as it did for some (no hate there, just saying).  This didn’t mean that our summers weren’t fun or memorable because they were.  I wouldn’t trade them for a do-over at all.  Some of the most fun moments have come from the creativity that was born out of boredom.

You don’t have to spend a lot to have fun and make memories with your kids.  It’s also easier when you are able to add a little structure to your day, typically when a child knows what to expect or is involved in activities they are less apt to be working your nerves.  I’m not saying that it won’t happen, I’m just saying there’s a better chance it won’t.

Fun Family Summer Activities

  • Pick your own. Find a farm with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, veggies, or flowers, and get picking. There is a website Pick  Your Own that can help you locate farms in your area where this is available!  You can also type “Pick your own” into a Google search and it will come up with some in your area as well (if your settings allow Google to know your location).
  • Planting: Plant a butterfly or hummingbird garden, or create a backyard wildlife habitat.
  • Grow fresh herbs in containers. Use old coffee cans, milk jugs, mason jars, plastic cups, or anything else you have around the house. Keep your herb garden on a patio or windowsill.
  • Make fairy houses. Use moss, bark, and leaves to create a dwelling fit for Thumbelina. For bonus points, tie in a book with your fairy garden!
  • Look for shapes in the clouds. Put a blanket in the grass and stare up at the sky. Take turns talking about what you see in the clouds. This helps cultivate creativity and imagination.  It’s one of my favorite things to do as a kid and even now with my own kids we will go outside and stare at the sky finding cloud shapes.  Sometimes on car rides if they start arguing I’ll find a cloud that looks like something and mention it so that they occupy their mind looking for things too.
  • Go bird watching. Take photos and keep track of your sightings. Use an app or guidebook to identify feathered friends.
  • Make a bird feeder. Watch birds visit your yard and add to your list of bird sightings.

Want more summer fun?  Check out this post-

What are your favorite art activities to do at home that bring out your artistic side?

Bring out the creativity and imagination to have some fun while spending time at home with the kids.  Creativity stimulates the brain and promotes learning.  It doesn’t require anything expensive or special to do and can not only entertain but create memories as well.

Get Creative!

  1. Make a fort.  Drape some sheets around the house and get out the flashlights.  You can also have a fort building contest to see who can build the best one!
  2. Plant some seeds in the backyard and watch them grow.  There are a lot of things you can grow from the food in your fridge, like potatoes and garlic.
  3. Make a band with kitchen pots, pans, and wooden spoons. Have kids pick they’re favorite song and try and re-create it on the pots and pans.
  4. Do you have a balloon?  If you do, then you can play keep it up.  Blow up the balloon and try to keep it in the air by bouncing it back and forth.  Here’s another fun twist by adding pool noodles to your game of keep it up!
  5. Make a store with everything in your kitchen.  Give your kids fake money (you can make some if you don’t have any) and have them buy the food from you.  This will teach them how to add and show them how it works to pick things out and pay for it.
  6. Make a treasure hunt.  Hide some treasure (it can be anything) and make some clues.  Each clue leads to the next clue until they find the treasure.   The Spruce has some clues for an indoor treasure hunt! Playtivities also have some printable cards with 10 clues for a treasure hunt!

Looking for some ideas to help make it through this #stayathome time with the family?  Here are some ideas to help have fun and get the kids up and moving around. They are all super easy and can be don’t require anything special.   Sometimes we forget about the simple things in times like this when we are overwhelmed and frustrated.

It’s been proven that moving affects your mental health whether adult or child.  It is fun to some days hang out and watch Netfilix or Disney + but we also have to remember the importance of moving and physical activity.

Movement Activities

  1. Have a dance party!  Put on some fun music and get moving. Make a playlist, add some glow sticks and have fun!  You can even take it up a notch with a freeze dance party!  You can also check out our Hulk Smash Dance Party
  2. Play a game of tag and get the whole family involved. It’s a fun way to get moving, get your heart rate up and wear kids out for bedtime that night!
  3. Hide and seek is a great way to move around and involve younger kids in learning to count.
  4. The floor is lava game.  Start on one side of the house and try to get to the other side.  You must jump from rug to rug and pillow to pillow without touching the floor.  Imaginative play is so important for kids, even in non-pandemic circumstances.
  5. Relay race especially if you have a backyard.  If you only have one child make an obstacle course for them. Mommy Poppins has a great indoor obstacle course option as well

I can vividly remember being a kid and not wanting to go outside because it was hot, or I wanted to watch tv instead- and then it would rain and there was absolutely nothing more that I wanted to do than go outside.  It was in those moments there was no tv show, no toy, no books, no anything that would provide me something sufficient to do.   This was also the struggle during hurricane season when storms would come through.  It was like murder.  Although all the opportunities I had prior to those moments I didn’t want.  It’s the funny thing about the way people tend to think.

For a couple years now there’s been this push of seeing people in person and being involved in “real life” because everyone is so caught up in the online world and social media.   The minute though that it is suggested we distance ourselves socially, suddenly no one can take it and they need to be in the biggest, closest social gatherings they can find.

Enter one of the (sometimes many) reasons that adulting sucks.  It’s our job to be responsible and lead our kids through this time.  That isn’t fun or easy.   They recently closed schools in our area for an additional week (I’m hoping that will be all but who knows).  I’m smart, I have a Masters Degree and am a big believer in continuous learning but that being said, I’m not a teacher.  It is not my expertise and it’s not a role you can just walk into.  That doesn’t mean we don’t do our best to keep kids’ minds sharp but I hope that it helps everyone to see just how much value our schools and teachers provide.  It’s also a balance in helping our kids not freak out and become scared over everything and keeping our own sanity at the same time.   All that we can do is our best.  Whatever that is at the moment.  Sometimes that will be reading books together or finding fun learning activities.  Other times that will be watching Netflix or playing games on the iPad.   It’s ok.  There’s no rule book for this and in our lifetime nothing like this has happened before so don’t let anyone tell you that you’re doing it wrong.    I will say that over the past two days I’ve found that my “out of routine” approach hasn’t helped.  I thought I’ll let them stay up a little later- and by that, I mean like 8:30-9:00 at the latest which wasn’t the most brilliant idea for a person whose children thrive on routine.  Oh well. Lesson learned and now I start this week trying to figure out balancing routine, the unknown and trying to keep my sanity in the process.  It will not be perfect and there will be meltdowns but that’s just life, it really doesn’t have anything to do directly with the Corona Virus or quarantine.

Ideas to Survive Quarantine:

Just the word quarantine let alone survive quarantine sounds dreadful and scary, doesn’t it?  Here are some ideas on how to get through it and keep your sanity and wit in the process.

1. Lego Competitions

Legos are educational and fun.  Get creative and have your very own lego competitions right at home! Little Bins for Little Hands has a cool  Printable Lego Challange Calendar!

2. Dance Party

Music makes us happy, dancing is a physical activity and gets us moving.   It’s the perfect time to put together your favorite playlist and have a little fun.  It reminds me of our Hulk Smash Dance Party that we did for my son, just on a “household” scale.  Get some lights or glow sticks from Amazon to add to the fun!

3. Facetime Party with Friends/Cousins

That’s right, GROUP FACETIME!  Virtual parties!  Seriously, it’s a great way to entertain and socialize with friends and family during this social distancing/quarantine.

4. Coloring

Coloring can be fun, creative and even therapeutic for kids and adults.

5. Keep a Journal

This is a great idea to help on so many levels.  Get feelings out, keep track of the day, talk about what is going on.  It can help process things while practicing skills like writing, drawing, fluency.  It will also be something that will be interesting to look back on later!

6. Start a Penpal Relationship

I get that maybe snail mail isn’t the best suggestion during this specific time but if you are using envelopes that are self-seal it could work.  There’s also the email option that can still make this safe and fun.

7. Fun with Patterns

15. Make It Up As You Go

Sometimes, the most creative, adventurous fun you can have is that which is made up as you go.  Whether creating a new game, making a scavenger hunt, or looking for Hidden Mickeys there is fun to be had.   When it gets stressful, take a step back and remember that everyone is feeling it.   We’ll get through this!

What are your suggestions for activities to survive quarantine? I’d love to hear them!

“Can I have a pet? Please! I promise to take care of it.”  -said every child at some point in their life.   Most of the time it’s something that will inevitably fall back on the parent even if it’s just partially which I think is what makes us dread it when we hear that question.

At the end of the school year, my daughter’s teacher asked if someone would like to take the class Betta fish.  My daughter begged, “please!! I know how to take care of it!” as she proceeded to explain to me the process of feeding and cleaning the bowl.   It was a fish, that came with the tank and all, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to say yes.  Apparently, other people felt that way also so there way a drawing for it, which we didn’t win.  This led us to the next inevitable question… “Can we buy one?”  which makes my 5-year-old pipe in too “I want one!”  Great. Now I need two?  Initially, I explained they could just share one, there wasn’t a point to two.  Besides, you can only have one Betta in a tank.

Proven Wrong By Amazon

In order to look for cheap tank options, we decided to look on Amazon.  We needed something more than just a plain bowl that didn’t have a lid.  We found this Betta Falls Kit by Aqueon.

It’s three separate containers that are part of one tank.  It’s pretty cool and it allowed for each kid to pick out a Betta fish which was a bonus.

The tank setup was super easy!

We also got these Betta Bed Leaf Hammock which apparently Betta’s like to lay on?

Interesting Tidbits about Betta Fish

  • They are jumpers- so you need a lid
  • They are Carnivores- You can supplement the fish’s diet with frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp or tubifex worms.
  • They can live up to 3 years
  • They grow up to 3 inches long
  • They gulp air from the surface of their tank so they don’t need aerated aquariums

Bettas don’t need a lot of room or a filter in their habitat.  However, having a bigger habitat and filter helps with maintenance so that’s the route we went with the Aqueon Betta Falls Kit.   The setup process and cost for a Betta fish is much more affordable than a full-on aquarium (especially a saltwater one).  The nice thing is they are beautiful and colorful, which you don’t get a lot of in a freshwater tank.

You feed them a very small amount 1-2 times a day, and their maintenance is very little.  This makes them a great pet for kids.

The Betta Bed Hammock

I’m not going to lie about this, I laughed at my husband when he purchased these.  I mean… really?? A Betta bed hammock?   Then, after about two weeks, the fist started laying on it.  This was one of the funniest things I had seen.  It was like a dog trying to get comfortable on it’s dog bed so it walks around in a circle before sitting.  The fish did nearly the same thing.

Is It Really An Easy Pet for Kids

Overall, this is an easy pet for the kids.  They like to watch it and talk to their fish.  It also helps with encouraging responsibility as they remember to feed their fish every day.  Fun fact,  you can train your Betta to play with it- Playing With Your Betta Fish.  This was funny because when my son went to pick out his fish he looked, and looked, then looked some more before saying “I want to see which one comes to me” meaning when he stuck his finger on the outside of the container which one came over.

If you’re looking for something very low maintenance that will allow your child to have a pet but not drive you crazy, I think a Betta fish is a great option to check out!
